Gibbings was an Irish artist and author and, along with Noel Rooke, was one of the founding members of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920. As a major influence in the revival of wood-engraving in the 20th century, Gibbings received a commission forĀ The Lives of Gallant LadiesĀ in 1923 for the Golden Cockerel Press, which he bought the following year. As the owner of the press, he commissioned work from fellow wood-engravers such as John Nash, David Jones, John Farleigh and most notably Eric Gill.
