Anatomy.- Crooke (Helkiah) Mikrokosmographia: A Description of the Body of Man, first edition, second issue with cancel title-page with 2 woodcuts, numerous woodcut illustrations, some staining, worming and repairs, in places affecting text, broken and many leaves loose, contemporary calf, very worn and detached, folio, Printed by W. Jaggard, 1616.
⁂ A complete copy but in need of some serious restoration work to the binding in particular. The book caused something of a sensation when it first appeared in 1615 as it included graphic descriptions of the reproductive organs in the vernacular. Crooke (1576-1648) went to university at Cambridge and then Leiden; he was admitted to the Royal College of Physicians in 1613 and was later appointed physician to the Royal Household. One of his patients was William Jaggard, who later gained fame for being Shakespeare's publisher and who, it is believed, was treated by Crooke for syphilis.
Provenance: Tho. Morley (ink inscription on title, dated 1706)
