⁂ The first is the first separate edition of a treatise on the dynamometer, a device to study muscular force in both men and animals which was used particularly by the artillery to determine horses' pulling power. It also describes and illustrates other inventions of a safety catch to prevent weapons firing accidentally, a weighing machine to help in the making of gun-powder and an electrical machine.
