Tobacco.- [Stephenson (Simon)] Representations of the Embossed, Chased, & Engraved Subjects and Inscriptions, which decorate the Tobacco Box and Cases, belonging to the Past Overseers Society...in the City of Westminster, first edition, engraved vignette title, tail-pieces and 32 plates (numbered 1-34, 2 double-page), one with partial hand-colouring, list of subscribers, title with contemporary ink signature at head and small stain, spots to one or two plates but generally clean, original roan-backed boards, uncut, a little worn, preserved in cloth drop-back box, 1824; and 9 others on tobacco and smoking, v.s. (10)
⁂ The tobacco box (originally a simple horn pocket container) was passed from one overseer to another, each one adding his name and later an engraved historical scene, necessitating additional cases. Some scenes are very elaborate and include Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, Waterloo and the trial of Queen Caroline.
