18th Century Prophet-Visionary.- Bryan (William) A Testimony of the Spirit of Truth Concerning Richard Brothers, later boards, 8vo, sold at J.Wright, 1795.
⁂ Scarce in commerce
Written in support of Richard Brothers (1757-1824), a self-proclaimed prophet-visionary and teacher of British Israelism. Brothers' religious awakening began around 1789 when his new-found beliefs forced him to quite the Navy. He began preaching a few years later, when he declared that he had been visited by an angel who had foretold God's destruction of London (an act that was forestalled by Brothers' plea for clemency). In 1793 Brothers declared himself the prophet of a new religion and quickly amassed a following, this movement was curtailed in 1795 however when Brothers was imprisoned on the grounds of criminal insanity after prophesying the death of the King.
