Peacham (Henry) The Compleat Gentleman...to which is added the Gentlemans Exercise, 2 parts in 1, third edition, engraved additional architectural title, typographic ornaments, woodcut initials and illustrations, mostly coats-of-arms, old ink inscription "Thos. Percival 1749" on title, some contemporary ink annotations and a few drawings of coats-of-arms in margins, titles soiled and with a couple of small ink stains, some other light soiling and staining, particularly to edges, tear to Qq1 at foot but no loss, later half calf, spine ruled in gilt with roan label, [Wing P943], small 4to, by E.Tyler, for Richard Thrale, 1661.
⁂ Manual written for the eight-year-old son of William Howard, Lord Arundel, and covering all subjects befitting a gentleman including conduct, the arts (particularly practical advice for drawing & painting), literature, heraldry and exercise (running, swimming, horsemanship, archery, hunting, hawking etc.). This is the last edition used by Samuel Johnson when compiling his definition of "heraldry" for his Dictionary.
