Barns (T. Alexander) The Wonderland of the Eastern Congo: The Region of the Snow-Crowned Volcanoes, the Pygmies, the Giant Gorilla and the Okapi, first edition, half-title, frontispiece and numerous plates, folding map at end, engraved bookplate of Walter G.Grant, original pictorial fawn buckram blocked with medallion of gorilla's head in black and gold on upper cover, t.e.g., others uncut, with the scarce pictorial dust-jacket, a very good copy, [Czech p.13], large 8vo, London & New York, 1922.

⁂ Barns was an explorer, naturalist and big game hunter who led several expeditions to the Belgian Congo and Tanganyika. On this expedition he travelled through what is now Rwanda, becoming the first Englishman to describe the Ngorongoro volcanic crater and one of the first to observe and hunt mountain gorillas.
