⁂ Barns was an explorer, naturalist and big game hunter who led several expeditions to the Belgian Congo and Tanganyika. On this expedition he travelled through what is now Rwanda, becoming the first Englishman to describe the Ngorongoro volcanic crater and one of the first to observe and hunt mountain gorillas.
