Description

Mignan (Capt. Robert) A Winter Journey through Russia, the Caucasian Alps, and Georgia; thence across Mount Zagros, by the Pass of Xenophon...into Koordistaun, 2 vol., first edition, half-title in vol.1 (not called for in vol.2), tinted lithographed frontispieces, wood-engraved plate and 8 illustrations, occasional light spotting, Peter Hopkirk's copy with his book-label and pencil note "vol.2 - Iraq, Persian gulf & Arabia" on front free endpaper of vol.1, original blind-stamped cloth, a little rubbed, spines faded, preserved together in modern cloth slip-case with divider, 8vo, 1839.

⁂ Mignan travelled overland with his family through Russia and Iran on his return to take up his military duties in India. At one point he encountered Alexander Humboldt, who had been travelling in the Urals, who recomended him to explore the western coastline of the Caspian Sea.
