Description

Markham (Clements R.) A History of the Abyssinian Expedition. With a chapter containing an account of the mission and captivity of Mr. Rassam and his companions, by Lt. W.F. Prideaux, first edition, half-title, 5 lithographed maps and plans, 4 folding, 3 hand-coloured in outline and with routes supplied in red, advertisement leaf and 52pp. publishers' catalogue at end, original green cloth, an excellent copy, preserved in modern cloth slip-case, 8vo, 1869.

⁂ In 1863 Emperor Theodore or Tewodros II of Ethiopia had requested British military assistance from Queen Victoria against the Turks, but when he did not receive a reply he imprisoned the British Consul and some missionaries in the fortress at Magdala. A British force was sent to rescue them, culminating in the Battle of Magdala in 1868. The British won, Theodore committed suicide and the fortress was destroyed.
