Ross (Sir John) Explanation and Answer to Mr.John Braithwaite's Supplement to Captain Sir John Ross's Narrative of a Second Voyage in the Victory, in Search of a North-West Passage, 8pp., first edition, drop-head title, foxed, light creasing to lower edge, original printed wrappers, light foxing to lower wrapper, [Sabin 73370], 4to, A.W.Webster, [1835].
⁂ Braithwaite was an engineer who had designed the first practical steam fire engine. His firm, Messrs. Braithwaite and Ericsson supplied the boilers for the paddle-steamer Victory in which Ross set out on his second voyage in 1829. The ship got stuck in the ice and eventually had to be abandoned, for which Ross blamed Braithwaite and his boilers, leading to a bitter exchange between the two men.
