Description

Stackelberg (Otto Magnus von) Costumes et Usages des Peuples de la Grece Moderne, first edition, engraved title and 30 hand-coloured engraved plates, occasional spotting, original red cloth, stamped in blind and lettered in gilt, rebacked in red morocco, corners worn, covers a little stained, [see Blackmer 1591 note; Bobins 164 (erroneously calling for 40 plates)], small folio, Rome, 1825.

The rare first edition with engraved plates rather than the lithographed versions which appeared in contemporaneous pirated copies. "The plates of costumes constitute Stackelberg's first published work on Greece, where he travelled from 1810-14. He was in Athens with Byron and travelled and worked with Cockerell, Haller von Hallerstein, Gropius, Linckh...and Foster in excavating various archaeological sites, particularly Bassae." (Bobins).

Provenance: P.G. Skinos (bookplate).
