Description
Turner (Joseph Mallord William, landscape and history painter, 1775-1851) Royal Academy admission ticket to a lecture signed JMW Turner, red ink stamp "Royal Academy London", printed card with signature, 60 x 95mm., n.d. [c. 1811]; and 6 other Royal Academy admission tickets, 1 signed by Flaxman, another by Northcote, 60 x 95mm. (7 pieces).
⁂ "In 1807 [Turner] was elected professor of perspective at the Royal Academy, though he did not deliver his first lectures until 1811. The lectures were beautifully illustrated with specially made large-scale diagrams and drawings, but were difficult to hear and understand. The notes survive, but are also difficult to decipher; what has been published so far indicates that these lectures provide considerable insight into Turner's deep knowledge of the history of landscape painting and of his own theories on the subject." - Luke Herrmann. Oxford DNB.
