Dickens (Charles) A Christmas Carol, first edition, first issue, second state, with "Stave I" heading, title page printed in red and blue dated 1843 and green endpapers, half-title in blue, 4 hand-coloured etched plates by & after Leech and 4 plain woodcut vignettes by Linton after Leech, foxing to plates, occasional light marginal finger-soiling, lacking front free endpaper, gift bookplate to pastedown, thanksgiving prayer in honour of donor loosely inserted, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper, original first issue brown fine-ribbed cloth, with unbroken 'D' within wreath and minimum 14mm gap between blind border and gilt cartouche, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, shelf-lean, spine ends and corners a little bumped, some light marking, still excellent overall, g.e., [Smith II 4], 8vo, Chapman & Hall, 1843.
