Spent most of her adult life in Cornwall, the setting for many of her novels – Jamaica Inn (1936), Rebecca (1938) and Frenchman’s Creek (1941). Her short story The Birds was made into a horror movie of the same name, directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1963.
