Private PressWorks
Founded in 1891 by William Morris, Kelmscott Press represents the culmination of Morris’s career in the graphic arts. In a short period between 1891 and 1898, the Kelmscott Press produced 66 books which were printed by Morris and illustrated by Edward Burne-Jones. The famed Kelmscott Chaucer is rightly revered as one of the ultimate private press books, combining artistic skill with typographic beauty to produce a folio of outstanding and lasting supreme quality. The last of the 13 copies printed on vellum to appear at auction made $550,000 in 1997.
