17th century Antiquary.- Gale (Thomas, Dean of York and antiquary, 1635/6-1702) Autograph Letter signed to Ralph Thoresby, 1p. with conjugate blank and address panel on verso, 171 x 164mm., York, 28th April 1699, thanking and returning to him the drawings of Almondbury and Maiden Castle, sending him a letter "of my old friend Pere Mabillon [Jean Mabillon(1632-1707), French Benedictine monk and scholar of the Congregation of Saint Maur]", and the antiquities of York, "we are here very poor of antiquityes. Some Observations about this City I have floating in my head; but realy have not time to putt them in paper", folds; and another, an engraved portrait of Thomas Gale, both removed from an album (2).
