⁂ 'the most entertaining and satisfactory of its kind; the authors are the acknowledged source of much that has been published in other forms' (Sabin). The authors were captains of the Spanish navy and were attached to a French expedition to South America organized by the Académie des Sciences. Juan took charge of the scientific observations and Ulloa the historical aspects of the expedition.
