East London.- [Gascoyne (Joel)] [An Actuall Survey of the Parish of St Dunstan Stepney alias Stebunheath...], large map of East London, including the 'Eight Hamlets contained in the said Parish', notably Whitechapel, Mile End, Spitalfields, Wapping etc., without the title/upper sheet(s) with cartouche, engraving by John Harris, originally printed on six sheets, now split into 3, laid paper without watermarks, if joined total sheet approx. 1250 x 1110 mm (49 1/4 x 43 3/4 in), split along folds into three sections, with associated losses to edges, some loss within engraved parts of the map itself, nicks and tears, some surface dirt and toning in places, edges slightly brittle, unframed, [1703].
⁂ Rare at auction. Copies are held in the British Library, Guildhall Library, and one with Tower Hamlets. We can trace no examples at auction. The London Topographical Society produced a facsimile edition in 1995 (Publication no. 150), including the present map, which contains extensive discussion on the life of Gascoyne, as well as of the features of the map itself.
