OLD BOOKS

Storage

Proper storage keeps old books safe. Avoid crammed or skewed placements. Old books should be upright or, if too large, laid flat. Using acid-free materials for storage is also key.

OLD BOOKS

Lighting

Light can fade and degrade old books. Keep them out of direct sunlight and use soft, indirect lighting. UV filters on lights, windows and display cases Can help. Consider using low-intensity LED lights for display. Avoid fluorescent lights, as they emit a high level of UV radiation.

OLD BOOKS

Environment

Old books need a stable, suitable environment. Sudden changes in temperature or humidity can damage them. A cool, dry place, with humidity around 30-50% and temperatures of about 16-20°C, is ideal. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to control the environment and consider investing in a hygrometer to monitor these levels.
OLD BOOKS

Handling

Books, especially old ones, can be fragile. To avoid damage, always use clean hands and avoid pulling on the spine or pages. If a book is large or heavy, provide it support when handling (there are purpose made cushions and lecterns designed for this purpose). Clean hands are better than gloves, due to the improved dexterity.

OLD BOOKS

Cleaning

Old books collect dust and dirt, which can speed up decay. Cleaning them, using a soft brush or a clean, dry cloth, helps maintain their condition.
OLD BOOKS

Conservation

Sometimes, old books need repair, especially for conservational purposes to ensure any minor issues do not deteriorate beyond repair! This can involve mending torn pages or plates, re-binding loose ones, or de-acidification. This work is usually best left to professionals - our specialists will be able to make recommendations on this basis, so please do just ask.

FAQ's

What period of printing is covered by English Literature & History?
Forum Auctions' English Literature and History department covers English-language books of historical and literary interest printed in English from the 15th century incunabular period through to the 20th century, with the exception of modern literature (in our case comprising fiction, poetry and plays dating from the birth of literary modernism), which is covered by our Modern First Editions department.
What is 'Incunabula'?
Incunabula, also known as incunables, refers to books that were printed using movable type before the year 1501, during the nascent stages of printing technology. These remarkable works represent the dawn of the printed word, capturing the transition from handwritten manuscripts to mass-produced books. Incunabula are prized for their historical significance, offering glimpses into the cultural, intellectual and artistic landscapes of the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. They hold immense value to collectors, scholars and institutions alike, with even incomplete or fragmentary examples commanding large sums at auction.
